## Ready when they can

- Name at least three different ways people can earn money
- Explain why a doctor might earn more than a shop assistant (training, skills, responsibility)
- Describe a way a child could earn money (chores, car wash, selling crafts)

## Lesson: How People Earn Money

People earn money by doing work. Most grown-ups have a job, working for a company, a shop, or a school. Some people run their own business, like a bakery or a repair shop. Others earn money by selling things they make or by doing tasks for neighbors, like walking dogs or mowing lawns.

*(drawing: A doctor often earns more pay than a shop assistant because becoming a doctor takes many extra years of training.)*

**Tip.** Jobs that need years of training, special skills, or big responsibility usually pay more. A doctor spends many years in school learning to keep people healthy, so doctors often earn more than a shop assistant, who trains for a much shorter time. That does not mean the shop assistant's job matters less, just that it needs less training.

**Example.** Zara wants to save up for a new bike. She washes her neighbor's car for five dollars and sells bracelets she made at a small stand. Soon she has enough money saved for the bike.

**Recap.** People earn money through jobs, running a business, or selling things and doing tasks, and jobs that need more training or responsibility often pay more.
