## Ready when they can

- Set a realistic savings goal and calculate how long it would take saving a fixed amount each week
- Create a simple financial plan for a specific purpose (birthday party, school trip, gift)
- Explain why planning ahead with money is better than spending everything as it comes in

## Lesson: Planning Ahead With Money

A financial plan is a plan for how you will save and spend money to reach a goal. You already know how to budget and how to keep money safe in a bank. A financial plan uses both of those skills to help you get something you actually want.

If you spend every bit of your money the moment you get it, there is nothing left when something bigger comes along. Planning ahead means saving a little now so you have enough later, instead of hoping it works out.

*(drawing: Each hop is one week of saving. After 4 hops of £5, the total reaches £20.)*

**Example.** Aisha wants to go on a school trip that costs £40. She has 4 weeks before she needs to pay. She works out she must save £10 a week to reach £40 exactly on time.

**Tip.** A good plan has three parts: the goal, how much it costs, and how much you will save each week. Write all three down so you don't forget.

**Recap.** A plan turns a big goal into small weekly steps you can actually save.
