# Paying for What Comes After School

Courses, apprenticeships and training all have a price and a payoff, and both vary far more by subject and provider than by prestige. Comparing them honestly needs the repayment terms, not just the sticker price.

## Ready when they can

- Compare two post-school paths on total cost, earnings foregone, and what is repaid and when
- Explain how a repayment threshold changes who actually pays the full amount
- Name two forms of support that do not have to be repaid and how to find them

## Lesson: Price your path after school honestly

Courses, apprenticeships and training all have a price and a payoff, and both vary far more by subject and provider than by prestige. College pays on average, but averages hide the spread that matters to you. Finishing a high-demand course at a solid place beats dropping out of a fashionable one nearly every time. Ask whether your specific path, with its costs and odds, is worth it for you.

**Example.** Compare two or three concrete paths side by side on one ledger. Add fees plus living costs plus wages you forgo while studying, then set that against realistic starting pay for your subject, not the brochure star. Include a non-college route as one row. Choose the row whose total story you would still respect if the rosy scenario never arrives.

Judge education debt on total repaid, not cash received. Learn the interest rate, when interest starts growing, and what the monthly bill looks like on realistic graduate pay. Income-linked plans tie payments to earnings above a threshold, which protects low earners but stretches the total. Borrow in order of cheapness: free support first, then official student loans with borrower protections, and commercial debt never if you can avoid it.

**Tip.** Grants, scholarships and bursaries never need repaying, so hunt them first. Find them through school advisers, official aid sites and each institution's own funding pages. Apply widely, including small local awards with better odds, and track every deadline in one table. Read the fine print: check whether each award renews, what grades keep it, and whether it stacks with other aid.

**Recap.** Compare full ledgers, judge debt on total repaid, and chase free money first.
