# Reading What You Agree To

An agreement binds you to the terms, not to what you assumed. Find the four that usually bite: how long it runs, how much notice you owe, whether it renews itself, and what leaving early costs.

## Ready when they can

- Locate the length, notice period, renewal, and exit terms in a short real agreement
- Say what each side is entitled to do under the terms, separately from what feels fair
- Name one term they would ask about or want changed before signing

## Lesson: Read the terms before you sign

An agreement binds you to its written terms, not to what you assumed. A contract spells out what each side must do, and what each side is allowed to do. Read the actual words on the page.

Find the four terms that usually bite. How long the deal runs, how much notice you owe, whether it renews itself, and what leaving early costs. Those four numbers matter more than how good the deal sounds on day one.

**Example.** A phone plan locks you in for 24 months with a fee for leaving early. A fixed-term flat lease locks both sides in for a year. A month-to-month lease instead renews each month until one side gives notice.

**Tip.** Judge the deal by what each side is entitled to do, not by what feels fair. Before you sign anything, name one term you would ask about or want changed, such as the exit fee.

**Recap.** Find the length, notice, renewal and exit cost in the actual words, and question one term before you sign.
