A goal that takes four months needs a number per week and a place to keep the money where it is awkward to reach. Most saving fails on the second part, not the first.

## Ready when they can

- Turn a target amount and a date into a weekly amount to put aside
- Name two ways to make saved money harder to spend by accident
- Say what to do when one week's contribution is missed, other than giving up

## Lesson: Saving up for something months away

A big goal feels small once you cut it into weeks. Take the target amount and divide it by the number of weeks left. That gives the amount to put aside each week. Saving $10 a week adds up to $520 in a year.

**Example.** Say you want a $120 bike in 12 weeks. Divide 120 by 12 and you get $10 a week. Or take holiday gifts: $550 over 11 months means $50 a month, which is about $11 a week. Small weekly numbers carry big goals.

The second half of saving is keeping the money out of reach. Move it to a separate savings account, or leave the cash at home, so spending it takes effort. And wait 30 days before buying something you merely want. The urge often fades.

**Tip.** If you miss one week, do not quit. Keep going and spread the missed amount over the weeks that are left. One gap never ruins the plan. Quitting is the only move that does.

**Recap.** Divide the goal by the weeks left, park the money out of reach, and keep going after a miss.
