# What Money Is

What money is and why we use it; that money is exchanged for goods and services; brief history from barter to coins to digital payments

## Ready when they can

- Explain that people use money to pay for things they need or want
- Give an example of how buying worked before money existed (swapping or bartering)
- Name at least two forms money can take (coins, notes, money in an account)

## Lesson: What Is Money?

Money is what people use to buy things. You give money, and you get food, toys, or clothes.

**Example.** Long ago, a farmer had eggs and wanted bread. A baker had bread and wanted eggs. They swapped eggs for bread. No money was needed.

Money can be coins or notes. It can also sit in an account. You can pay with a card or a phone tap. The card is not money itself.
