## Ready when they can

- Given 4,562, state that 1000 more is 5,562 and 1000 less is 3,562
- Explain using place value that a 1000 jump changes the thousands place, with carries or borrows possibly continuing into higher places
- Apply this skill to numbers beyond 10,000

## Lesson: 1000 more or less

A jump of 1000 changes the thousands digit. A carry or borrow can continue through higher places when needed.

*(drawing: Jump one full space on the number line and you land exactly 1000 away.)*

**Example.** Look at 6,781. The thousands digit is 6. Add one to get 7, so 1000 more than 6,781 is 7,781. Subtract one to get 5, so 1000 less than 6,781 is 5,781. The 781 part never changes.

**Example.** Try a bigger number: 12,345. The thousands digit is 2. Add one to get 3, so 1000 more is 13,345. Subtract one to get 1, so 1000 less is 11,345.

**Example.** When the thousands digit is 9, adding 1000 to 9,608 rolls it to 10,608: a new ten-thousands digit appears and the thousands digit resets to 0. A carry can continue into higher places, so check left of the thousands digit.

**Recap.** A jump of 1000 changes the thousands place. Carries or borrows can continue through higher places, while the hundreds, tens, and ones stay the same.
