# Arrays for multiplication

Use arrays to represent multiplication and division situations

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Multiplication & Division · Ages 5 to 6
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/mathematics/arrays-for-multiplication-mt_GRWwTDZ3wD

## Ready when they can

- Build an array of 3 rows of 4 objects to show 3 × 4
- Read an array and state the total
- Use an array to solve a simple division problem (e.g. 12 objects in rows of 4 make 3 rows)

## Lesson: Arrays for multiplication

When objects sit in neat rows and columns, that is an array. Arrays help you multiply and divide fast.

*(drawing: 3 rows of 4 make 3 × 4 = 12. The sign × means multiply: 3 groups of 4.)*

**Example.** Mia's egg box has 3 rows. Each row holds 4 eggs. She counts 3 × 4, so she has 12 eggs. Reading backward, 12 eggs in rows of 4 make 3 rows, so 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

**Tip.** You can read an array backward too. 12 eggs in rows of 4 make 3 rows. That means 12 ÷ 4 = 3.

**Recap.** Rows and columns in an array show multiplication and division together.
