# Capacity and volume

Measure and begin to record capacity and volume using non-standard and standard units

## Ready when they can

- Measure capacity by counting how many cups fill a container
- Begin to use litres as a unit of capacity
- Record capacity measurements with a number and unit

## Lesson: Counting cups to measure capacity

Capacity is how much a container can hold. You can measure it by filling small cups. Pour cup after cup and count them. The number of cups tells you the capacity.

*(drawing: Each block stands for one cup poured in. Count them: 1, 2, 3, 4.)*

**Example.** Omar fills a bottle using a small cup. He pours 5 cups in. He writes '5 cups'. Now everyone knows how much it holds.

**Tip.** For bigger amounts, we use litres. Always write a number with its unit, like '3 litres'. A number alone does not tell the whole story.

**Recap.** Count the cups, then write the number with a unit.
