# Comparing Capacity

Compare and describe capacity and volume using language such as full, empty, more than, less than, half full

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Measurement · Ages 4 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Compare two containers and say which holds more/less
- Use 'half full' and 'quarter full' to describe a container
- Solve practical problems like 'Which cup has more water?'

## Lesson: Full, empty, and in between

Capacity means how much a cup can hold. A cup can be full or empty. It can also be somewhere in between. You can compare two cups to see which holds more.

*(drawing: Cup B holds more water than Cup A.)*

**Example.** Mia pours a little milk in her cup. Leo pours a lot of milk in his cup. Leo's cup has more milk than Mia's cup.

*(drawing: This bar is half shaded. A cup like this is half full.)*

**Tip.** To compare fairly, use cups that are the same size. Then check which one has more water inside.

**Recap.** Compare containers by seeing which one holds more or less water.
