# Comparing groups: more or fewer

Compare two groups of objects to determine which has more, fewer, or whether they are equal, using matching and counting strategies

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Counting & Cardinality · Ages 4 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Use one-to-one matching to compare two groups
- State which group has more/fewer after counting both
- Use the language 'equal to', 'more than', 'less than', 'fewer', 'most', 'least'

## Lesson: Comparing groups: more or fewer

Look at two groups of things. Which one has more? Which one has fewer? Match one thing from each group. The group with leftovers has more. Or count both groups. The bigger number means more. Most means the biggest amount of all. Least means the smallest amount of all.

*(drawing: 5 stars is more than 3 stars.)*

**Example.** Mia has 4 apples. Zoe has 6 apples. Mia matches each apple to one of Zoe's. Two of Zoe's apples have no match. Zoe has more apples.

**Tip.** Match every thing, one to one. No leftovers on either side means the groups are equal.

**Recap.** Match or count both groups. Leftovers show which one has more.
