# Comparing Lengths & Heights

Compare two objects directly by length or height and describe the difference using language such as long, short, tall, longer, shorter, taller, double, half

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Measurement · Ages 4 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Stand two children back-to-back and say who is taller/shorter
- Directly compare the heights of two towers and describe one as taller
- Use 'longer' and 'shorter' to compare two ribbons placed side by side

## Lesson: Which one is longer, taller, shorter?

Put two things side by side to compare. Line up one end of each thing. Then look at the other end. One is longer, and the other is shorter. Or one is taller, and the other is shorter.

*(drawing: Tower B has more blocks. Tower B is taller than Tower A. Two groups of 3 make 6, so Tower B is about double as tall.)*

**Example.** Maya and Sam stand back-to-back. Maya's head is higher. Maya is taller than Sam. Sam is shorter than Maya.

**Tip.** To compare fairly, line up one end of each thing. Then look at the other end.

**Recap.** Line things up, then look which end is longer or taller.
