# Comparing Mass and Weight

Compare two objects directly by mass or weight and describe the difference using language such as heavy, light, heavier than, lighter than

## Ready when they can

- Heft two objects and say which is heavier/lighter
- Use a simple balance to compare the weight of two objects
- Describe one object as 'heavier than' another

## Lesson: Heavy or light?

You can compare how heavy things are. Pick up one thing. Pick up another. Feel which one is heavier. A big thing is not always heavier than a small thing.

**Example.** Mia holds a bag of apples in one hand. She holds a feather in the other hand. The bag feels heavy. The feather feels light. The apples are heavier than the feather. The feather is lighter than the apples.

**Tip.** A balance can help too. The heavier thing makes its side go down.
