## Ready when they can

- Prove that a given angle must be 60° by chaining angle facts in a logical sequence
- Find and explain the error in a peer's fraction division calculation
- Construct a counter-example to disprove a false conjecture (e.g. 'multiplying always makes bigger')

## Lesson: Building a mathematical argument

When you want to show a friend why your answer must be right, use a chain of small, true steps that leads to one conclusion. Each step has to follow from a fact you already know, like angles in a triangle adding to 180 degrees. If every step is solid, anyone reading your argument can follow it and see why your answer must be true.

**Example.** A triangle has two angles, 80 degrees and 70 degrees. Step 1: angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees. Step 2: 80 + 70 = 150. Step 3: 180 minus 150 = 30. So the third angle is 30 degrees. Each step used a fact, not a guess. A picture alone cannot prove the answer; only the angle facts can.

**Example.** Omar divides 2/5 by 1/2 and writes 2/5 times 1/2 = 2/10. That is wrong. Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal. The correct working is 2/5 times 2/1 = 4/5. Spotting the error means naming exactly which step broke a rule.

**Example.** One working example cannot prove a rule always holds. 'Multiplying always makes numbers bigger' sounds true, but 4 times 0.5 = 2, which is smaller than 4. That single counter-example is enough to break the rule.

**Tip.** When you write an argument, say which fact each step uses: 'because angles on a straight line add to 180 degrees' or 'because dividing means multiplying by the reciprocal.' A reader should never have to guess your reason.

**Recap.** A strong maths argument uses known facts step by step, and one good counter-example is enough to break a false claim.
