# Counting Within 1,000

Count within 1000, including skip-counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Counting & Cardinality · Ages 7 to 8
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/mathematics/counting-within-1-000-mt_M2v1A9OEuM

## Ready when they can

- Count forwards and backwards within 1000 from any starting number
- Skip-count by 5s from any multiple of 5 to 1000
- Skip-count by 100s from any number (e.g. 150, 250, 350 …)

## Lesson: Counting up to 1,000

Numbers can get very big. You already know how to count by 2s, and you know the hundreds: 100, 200, 300. Now you will count all the way to 1,000, one at a time, by 5s, and by 100s.

*(drawing: Each jump adds 5. Count the jumps: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.)*

**Example.** Ben has 4 boxes with 100 blocks in each box. He skip-counts the boxes instead of counting every block: 100, 200, 300, 400. He already knows the hundreds, so counting on is fast.

**Tip.** Counting backward works the same way, just take away instead of add. From 400, subtract 100 each time: 400, 300, 200, 100, 0. If you lose your place, say the forward pattern first, then read it backward.

**Recap.** You can count forward or backward, by ones, by fives, or by hundreds, all the way to 1,000.
