## Ready when they can

- Write 7/10 as 0.7 and vice versa
- Convert 45/100 to 0.45
- Place 0.3 and 3/10 at the same point on a number line

## Lesson: Decimals for tenths and hundredths

You already know tenths: cutting something into 10 equal pieces, like 3/10. A decimal shows that same amount a different way, using a decimal point instead of a fraction line. Three tenths is written 0.3, with one digit right after the point.

*(drawing: 3/10 and 0.3 land on the exact same spot on this line of tenths.)*

**Example.** Now look at 45/100. A hundred is bigger than a ten, so hundredths need two digits after the point: 45/100 is 0.45. Compare that to 7/10, shown below, which only needs one digit: 0.7.

**Tip.** Count the zeros on the bottom number of the fraction. One zero, like in 10, means one digit after the point. Two zeros, like in 100, means two digits.

**Recap.** Tenths use one digit after the decimal point, and hundredths use two. Each decimal lands at the same point as its matching fraction.
