- Read 0.07 and express as 7/100

## Lesson: Decimals as Fractions: Tenths and Hundredths

A decimal number and a fraction can be the same amount, just written two different ways. Look at the digits after the decimal point. The first digit is tenths. The second digit is hundredths.

*(drawing: 0.3 has one digit after the point, so it is 3 tenths: 3/10.)*

**Example.** Look at 0.62. There are two digits after the point, 6 and 2, so the number is 62 hundredths in all. That means 0.62 = 62/100.

**Example.** Now try it the other way. The fraction 7/100 has a denominator of 100, so it needs two digits after the point. Written as a decimal, that is 0.07.

**Tip.** Count the digits after the decimal point. One digit means tenths, out of 10. Two digits mean hundredths, out of 100.

**Recap.** One digit after the decimal point means tenths, two digits mean hundredths, and either way it's the same amount as the matching fraction.
