# Early Maths Vocabulary

Use mathematical words carefully when counting, comparing, and describing shapes and positions

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Mathematical Thinking · Ages 5 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Use 'more than', 'fewer than', and 'the same as' correctly when comparing groups
- Name shapes correctly and describe their features using words like 'sides' and 'corners'
- Use positional words (above, below, next to) precisely to describe where objects are

## Lesson: Saying it the Math Way

Math has special words. They help you say exactly what you mean. 'More than' means one group is bigger. 'Fewer than' means one group is smaller. 'The same as' means the groups match.

*(drawing: 6 apples is more than 3 apples. 3 apples is fewer than 6.)*

**Example.** Look at a triangle. It has 3 straight sides. It has 3 corners, where the sides meet.

**Tip.** Above means higher up. Below means lower down. Next to means right beside. Pick the word that matches exactly where something is.

**Recap.** Use the exact math word every time you count, compare, or point.
