# Finding quarters (age 5+)

Recognise, find, and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape, or quantity

## Ready when they can

- Fold a shape into four equal parts and identify each as 'a quarter'
- Find a quarter of 12 objects by sharing into 4 equal groups
- Identify whether a shape has been divided into quarters (four equal parts)

## Lesson: Finding a quarter of things

A half is two equal parts. Cut each half again. Now you have four equal parts. Each part is called a quarter. All four parts must be the same size.

**Example.** Mia brings 8 apples for four friends. She shares them into 4 equal groups. Each group gets 2 apples. A quarter of 8 is 2. Four parts that do not match are not quarters.

**Tip.** Not sure? Lay one piece on top of another. If they match exactly, they are real quarters.
