# Fraction-Decimal Equivalents

Recognise and write decimal equivalents of 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Fractions · Ages 8 to 9
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/mathematics/fraction-decimal-equivalents-mt_DRlbMok2lT

## Ready when they can

- State that 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75
- Match fractions to decimals in a sorting activity
- Explain why 1/4 = 25/100 = 0.25 using a hundredths grid

## Lesson: Fraction-decimal equivalents

You already know how to write hundredths as decimals, like 0.47 for 47 hundredths. Some fractions turn into decimals you will see all the time: 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4.

*(drawing: This bar has 4 equal parts. Shading 1 part is 1/4, or 25 hundredths, written 0.25.)*

**Example.** A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour. Split the cup into 4 equal parts and shade 3 of them. Each part is 25 hundredths, so 3 parts make 75 hundredths: 3/4 = 0.75.

**Tip.** Learn these three by heart: 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75. They show up everywhere, from money to recipes.

**Recap.** 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4 always equal 0.5, 0.25, and 0.75.
