## Ready when they can

- Calculate the total cost of two items priced in pence
- Work out change from 50p after buying an item costing 35p
- Solve 'How much more money do I need?' problems

## Lesson: Adding and subtracting money

You already know how to add pence and take pence away. Now you will use those same skills on money problems: working out the total cost of things, giving change, and finding out how much more you need.

*(drawing: You pay 50p for something that costs 35p. Count on from 35p to 50p: that gap is 15p change.)*

**Example.** Mia buys a sticker for 20p and a pencil for 15p. To find the total cost, she adds the two prices: 20 + 15 = 35p.

**Tip.** After you work out change, check it. Add the change back to the price you paid. If the total matches what you handed over, your answer is right.

**Example.** Sam has 40p. He wants a toy car that costs 60p. He subtracts to find out how much more he needs: 60 - 40 = 20p more.

**Recap.** Add prices to find totals, subtract to find change, and subtract again to see how much more money you need.
