# Numbers to 10,000

Identify, represent, and estimate numbers up to 10,000 using different representations

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Number Representation & Place Value · Ages 8 to 9

## Ready when they can

- Represent a four-digit number on a place-value chart or with base-ten materials
- Estimate where a number falls on a 0–10,000 number line
- Match different representations of the same number (e.g. expanded form, place-value counters, numeral)

## Lesson: Numbers to 10,000

Four-digit numbers run from 1,000 to 9,999. Each digit has its own place: thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. The digit in the thousands place tells you which group of a thousand the number belongs to. 10,000 has five digits.

**Example.** Look at 3,452. The 3 is in the thousands place, so this number is in the 3,000s. In expanded form, that's 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 2.

*(drawing: 3,452 sits between the 3,000 and 4,000 marks, close to the 3,000 side since 452 is a small part of the next thousand.)*

To place a number on a 0 to 10,000 line, look at the thousands digit first. It tells you which thousand-sized space to land in. Then use the rest of the digits to nudge closer to one end or the other.

**Recap.** The thousands digit shows which group of 1,000 a number belongs to, and the other digits fine-tune exactly where it falls.
