## Ready when they can

- Show that 5 = 1 + 4, 5 = 2 + 3, 5 = 0 + 5 etc.
- Use objects or drawings to find all pairs that make a given number
- Record decompositions as equations

## Lesson: Splitting numbers into two groups

You know how to put two groups together. Now you can split one snack into two parts to share. The two parts still add up to the whole. For example, 5 can be 1 and 4, or 2 and 3. A number can split in more than one way.

*(drawing: 5 stars split into two groups: 2 and 3.)*

**Example.** Mia has 6 apples. She makes two piles: 2 apples and 4 apples. Together, they still make 6.

**Tip.** There is more than one way to split a number. 5 can be 1 and 4, or 2 and 3. Check by adding the parts back together.

**Recap.** A number splits into two parts in more than one way. The parts always add back to the whole.
