# Place Value to 1000

Solve number problems and practical problems involving place value of numbers up to 1000

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Number Representation & Place Value · Ages 7 to 8
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/mathematics/place-value-to-1000-mt_98c2qwEF7Q

## Ready when they can

- Solve a problem that requires identifying how many hundreds, tens, or ones are in a number
- Apply place-value knowledge to a practical context (e.g. counting money in pounds)
- Explain the strategy used to solve a place-value problem

## Lesson: Putting Hundreds, Tens, and Ones Together

Money comes in hundred-pound notes, ten-pound notes, and one-pound coins. Every number up to 1000 is built from three parts: hundreds, tens, and ones. You already know which digit is which. Add the parts together to build the whole number, or take a number apart to see its pieces.

*(drawing: Count in tens. Ten tens make one hundred: 100.)*

**Example.** Leo has 4 hundreds, 3 tens, and 7 ones. He adds them: 400 + 30 + 7 = 437. Ana has 2 hundred-pound notes, 5 ten-pound notes, and 6 one-pound coins. She adds them too: 200 + 50 + 6 = 256 pounds.

**Tip.** Keep the parts in order: hundreds first, then tens, then ones. Mix up the order and you might write the wrong number, like 347 instead of 437.

**Recap.** A number is hundreds, tens, and ones added together. Keep them in order and add to find the total.
