## Ready when they can

- Explain why 'for every 2 red beads there are 5 blue beads' can be written as 2:5 or as 2/5 of the blue count
- Identify the multiplicative relationship in a table of values (e.g. y is always 3 times x)
- Connect the ratio a:b to the fraction a/b and to the linear function y = (a/b)x

## Lesson: The Ratio Is the Fraction Is the Line

You already write ratios like 2:5 and turn one amount into a fraction of another. A ratio compares two quantities measured in the same unit, and you can write it three ways: 2 to 5, 2:5, or the fraction 2/5. All three mean the same thing. Like fractions, ratios can be simplified, so 4:10 is the same comparison as 2:5.

*(drawing: 2 red beads for every 5 blue beads is the ratio 2:5, and it is also the fraction 2/5 of the blue count.)*

Now connect the two ideas. A ratio does not just compare two amounts once. It tells you the fixed multiplier between them every time. If the red count is always 2/5 of the blue count, then doubling the blue doubles the red. A relationship with a fixed multiplier like this is called direct variation, and mathematicians write it as y = kx, where k is the multiplier.

**Example.** Look at a table of x and y values: when x is 1, y is 3. When x is 2, y is 6. When x is 3, y is 9. Every single time, y is 3 times x. That constant relationship is the ratio y:x = 3:1, the fraction 3/1, and the line y = 3x passing through (0, 0).

The same relationship draws a picture. Plot y against x for y = 3x and every point sits on one straight line through the origin (0, 0). That always happens with direct variation: zero x gives zero y, so the line must pass through (0, 0), and the multiplier k is exactly the line's steepness. A ratio, a fraction, and a line through zero are three views of a single idea.

**Tip.** To turn a ratio a:b into a graph rule, just divide: a/b is the number you multiply x by to get y. That number is also the line's steepness.

**Recap.** A ratio a:b is the same as the fraction a/b, and it draws a straight line through zero with that fraction as its steepness.
