## Ready when they can

- Read a three-digit numeral aloud correctly
- Write a three-digit number in words (e.g. 'three hundred and forty-two')
- Write a number in expanded form (e.g. 600 + 30 + 7)

## Lesson: Reading and writing numbers to 1000

You already know that a three-digit number has a hundreds digit, a tens digit, and a ones digit. Now you will read numbers like 342 out loud, write them in words, and break them apart into hundreds, tens, and ones.

*(drawing: 342 splits into 300, 40, and 2. Add them back together and you get 342 again.)*

**Example.** Look at 508. There are 5 hundreds, 0 tens, and 8 ones. We skip the tens word and say 'five hundred and eight'. In expanded form it is 500 + 0 + 8.

**Tip.** Watch out when the tens digit is 0. Do not turn the ones digit into a 'ty' word. 508 is 'five hundred and eight', not 'five hundred and eighty'.

**Recap.** A numeral, its words, and its expanded form all name the same number in three different ways.
