# Rows & Columns in Rectangles

Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Multiplication & Division · Ages 7 to 8

## Ready when they can

- Divide a rectangle into equal rows and columns of unit squares
- Count the total number of squares using repeated addition or skip counting
- Relate the rows-and-columns structure to a rectangular array

## Lesson: Rows and Columns in a Rectangle

You already know how to make arrays for multiplication. A rectangle can be split into a grid the same way. Draw lines across and down to make equal rows and columns of same-size squares.

*(drawing: This rectangle is split into 3 rows and 4 columns of squares.)*

**Example.** Mia draws a rectangle and adds lines to split it into 2 rows and 5 columns of equal squares. She skip counts by rows: 5, 10. The rectangle holds 10 squares.

**Tip.** Count how many squares are in one row, then skip count that number once for each row. It is much faster than counting every square by one.

**Recap.** Split a rectangle into equal rows and columns, then skip count or add row by row to find the total number of squares.
