# Tenths

Count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and from dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Fractions · Ages 7 to 8

## Ready when they can

- Count: one tenth, two tenths, three tenths … up to ten tenths (one whole)
- Show that dividing a shape into 10 equal parts gives tenths
- Explain that 3 ÷ 10 = 3/10

## Lesson: Tenths

A tenth is what you get when you cut something into 10 equal parts. Every part must be the same size. One of those parts is one tenth. We write it as 1/10.

*(drawing: This bar is cut into 10 equal parts. One part is shaded, so this shows one tenth: 1/10.)*

**Example.** Priya has a pizza cut into 10 equal slices. She eats 3 slices. She has eaten three tenths of the pizza, or 3/10.

*(drawing: Count up in tenths: one tenth, two tenths, three tenths, and so on. Ten tenths make one whole.)*

**Example.** Dividing by 10 also gives tenths. If you share 3 things equally among 10 people, each person gets 3 ÷ 10, which is 3/10.

**Recap.** A tenth is one of 10 equal parts, written 1/10, and ten tenths make one whole.
