# Times tables (age 7+)

Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4, and 8 multiplication tables

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Multiplication & Division · Ages 7 to 8
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/mathematics/times-tables-age-7-mt_wQ89AEXhz3

## Ready when they can

- Recall 3 × 1 through 3 × 12 and corresponding division facts
- Recall 4 × 1 through 4 × 12 and corresponding division facts
- Recall 8 × 1 through 8 × 12 and corresponding division facts

## Lesson: Fast facts: the 3, 4, and 8 times tables

You already know how to skip count by 4s and 8s. Counting by 3s uses the same idea: you jump by 3 each time. Times tables use that same counting, but faster: instead of counting up in your head, you just remember the answer, like 3 x 6 = 18.

*(drawing: 3 rows of 4 make 12 in total. That's 3 x 4 = 12, and also 4 x 3 = 12.)*

**Example.** Priya has 32 pencils to share into 4 equal boxes. She remembers 4 x 8 = 32, so she knows right away that each box gets 8 pencils, with no counting needed.

**Tip.** Every times table fact hides a division fact inside it. If you know 8 x 6 = 48, you also know 48 divided by 8 = 6 and 48 divided by 6 = 8.

**Recap.** Learn the 3, 4, and 8 times tables so well that the answers just pop into your head, for multiplying and for dividing.
