# Two-Step Equations

Solve two-step word problems using the four operations; represent problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Addition & Subtraction · Ages 8 to 9

## Ready when they can

- Solve a two-step problem that combines addition/subtraction with multiplication/division
- Write an equation using a letter for the unknown (e.g. 3 × n + 5 = 26)
- Assess the reasonableness of the answer using estimation and mental computation

## Lesson: Two-Step Equations

You already solve two-step word problems. Now you will write them as equations. A letter, like n, stands for the number you don't know yet. One step can be multiplication or division, and the other can be addition or subtraction.

*(drawing: Jay buys 3 bags of 8 marbles, then adds the 5 he had at home. The equation is 3 x 8 + 5 = n. First 3 x 8 = 24, then 24 + 5 = 29. So n = 29.)*

**Example.** Some problems tell you the ending number and ask where you started. Ravi had some trading cards. His friend gave him 25 more, and now he has 60 cards. The equation is n + 25 = 60. To find n, subtract: 60 - 25 = 35. So Ravi started with 35 cards.

**Tip.** Estimate before you solve. Round the numbers and do the math in your head first. If your estimate is about 30 and your exact answer comes out as 300, you likely made a mistake somewhere.

**Recap.** Turn the story into an equation with a letter, solve it step by step, then check that the answer makes sense.
