## Ready when they can

- Given two written numerals (e.g. 4 and 7), identify which is greater
- Correctly use > and < or 'greater than' / 'less than' to compare single-digit numerals

## Lesson: Which number is bigger?

You already compare groups of things. Now you will compare written numbers. Look right at the numbers on the page.

*(drawing: Which number is bigger, 4 or 7?)*

**Example.** Lily looks at 4 and 7. She knows 7 comes after 4 when counting. So 7 is the bigger number.

**Tip.** Think about counting. The number you say later is bigger. The pointy tip of < and > points to the small number.

**Recap.** The number that comes later when counting is the bigger number.
