# What Is a Half?

Recognise, find, and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape, or quantity

Subject: Mathematics · Area: Fractions · Ages 5 to 6

## Ready when they can

- Fold a shape into two equal parts and identify each as 'a half'
- Find half of 8 objects by sharing into 2 equal groups
- Identify whether a shape has been divided into halves or not (equal vs unequal parts)

## Lesson: What is a half?

Halves are two equal parts. Split something into two same-size pieces. Each piece is called a half.

*(drawing: This circle is cut into two equal parts. One part is shaded. That shaded part is called a half.)*

Both parts must be the same size. If one piece is bigger, it is not a half. Halves always match exactly.

*(drawing: Leo has 8 apples to share with a friend. He puts 4 apples in each group. Half of 8 is 4.)*

**Tip.** To check for a half, look at both parts closely. Do they match in size? Then it is a half.

**Recap.** A half is one of two equal parts, always the same size.
