## Ready when they can

- Explain the difference between assertive, aggressive, and passive responses
- Role-play saying no in a peer pressure scenario
- Express a personal boundary clearly and respectfully in a real situation

## Lesson: Assertive Communication

There are three ways people respond when they want something or don't like something. Passive means staying quiet and going along with it, even when you don't want to. Aggressive means being pushy or demanding, without caring about the other person's feelings. Assertive means saying what you think and feel clearly and respectfully, without being mean or staying silent.

*(drawing: Three ways to respond when something bothers you. Aim for assertive: calm, clear, and kind.)*

**Example.** Someone cuts in front of Priya in line. Passive: Priya says nothing and lets it slide, even though it bothers her. Aggressive: Priya shouts, 'Get to the back, now.' Assertive: Priya says, 'Excuse me, I was here first. Please go to the back of the line.' Only the assertive response says what she needs without giving up or attacking.

**Tip.** When you need to say no, keep your voice calm and steady. Look at the person, say what you mean in a short sentence like 'I don't want to do that,' and repeat it if they keep pushing. You don't need to explain yourself over and over or apologize for having a boundary.

**Tip.** Assertive doesn't mean mean. You can disagree with a friend and still care about them. The goal is to be clear about your own needs while staying respectful of theirs.

**Recap.** Assertive means saying what you think and feel clearly and kindly, without staying silent or being pushy.
