# Brain science of emotions

Explore how connected brain systems, including the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, contribute to emotional responses and choices. Recognise that brain development continues during adolescence and varies between people. Describe stress-related body changes, distinguish holding back emotional expression from changing a feeling, and practise realistic cognitive reappraisal.

## Lesson: Your brain on big feelings

You have learned that feelings can influence choices. Several connected brain systems help with this. The amygdala helps detect emotionally important events, including possible threats. The prefrontal cortex helps with planning and considering responses. These parts work with other brain areas. They are not a separate alarm and brake that explain every feeling.

During stress, brain and body systems can release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These help the body respond. Strong or lasting stress can make thinking or remembering harder. The effects vary with the situation. Brain activity, hormones and body changes do not follow one fixed four-step chain for every emotion.

Emotion regulation means managing a feeling or your response to it. It can include pausing, seeking support or changing an interpretation. Suppression means holding back outward signs, such as tears. It is one regulation strategy. Privacy or safety can make it useful. Hiding a feeling does not necessarily remove it. Seek support if you keep struggling.

Cognitive reappraisal means considering another plausible meaning of an event. A low quiz score need not mean 'I can never learn this.' It can show what to practise next. A useful reappraisal fits the facts. It does not require pretending you feel fine or deciding that harmful treatment is acceptable.

Brain development continues during adolescence, including systems involved in planning and responding to rewards. Dopamine helps these reward systems work; it does not explain every strong feeling. Experience, context and individual differences also matter. A person's age or developing brain alone cannot tell us exactly how strongly they will feel.

**Recap.** Connected brain and body systems contribute to emotions. Managing a response can include a pause, support or a realistic new interpretation.
