## Ready when they can

- Take a challenging task and list at least three smaller steps to complete it
- Start with the first step rather than procrastinating on the whole task
- Acknowledge progress after completing each step

## Lesson: Breaking a Big Job into Small Steps

A big task can feel like a mountain. It is too much to look at all at once. But you do not have to do it all in one jump. You can break it into smaller steps and do them one at a time. Start with the first step.

*(drawing: Maya turned 'clean my room' into three small steps. She starts with the first one.)*

**Example.** Jamal has a big school report due. He makes three smaller jobs: read about the topic, list the points he wants to explain, then write the report. He starts with the reading.

After you finish a step, stop and notice it. Say 'I did it' or draw a check mark. Celebrating small wins keeps you going until the whole task is done.

**Recap.** Turn a big task into small steps, start with step one, and celebrate every step you finish.
