# Culture and Experience Shape Emotions

Understand that emotional responses are shaped by personal experiences, culture, and context — the same situation triggers different emotions in different people because of their backgrounds and past experiences

## Ready when they can

- Explain why two people might have very different emotional reactions to the same event
- Give an example of how a past experience shaped someone's emotional response
- Describe how cultural background might influence what makes someone feel proud or embarrassed

## Lesson: Same Moment, Different Feelings

The same moment does not always feel the same way to everyone. A loud noise, a scary movie, or a thunderstorm can bring one feeling to you and a completely different feeling to someone else. This happens because of the experiences you have already had, and because of your culture, meaning the beliefs and customs your family and community share.

*(drawing: Same storm, different feelings. Five kids felt scared, four felt excited.)*

**Example.** Ben flinches every time a balloon pops, because a balloon once popped right next to his ear and startled him badly. His friend Tam laughs when balloons pop, since nothing like that ever happened to her. Same sound, different feelings, because they carry different memories.

**Tip.** When someone reacts differently than you expect, try thinking, 'I wonder what happened to them before,' instead of deciding their feeling is wrong. Once you know a bit of their story, the feeling usually makes sense.

**Recap.** The same event can feel different to different people, because everyone carries their own experiences and culture with them.
