## Ready when they can

- Identify an ethical issue and describe at least two different perspectives on it
- Explain which perspective they agree with most and give reasons for their position
- Acknowledge that the other perspective has some validity even if they disagree

## Lesson: Looking at Both Sides of a Real Issue

Some questions don't have one easy answer. Should animals live in zoos? Is it fair if some kids have more toys or trips than others? People who think carefully about these questions look at more than one side before deciding what they believe.

**Example.** Think about zoos. One person might say zoos are good because they protect animals that are dying out in the wild and teach visitors to care about nature. Another person might say zoos are unfair because wild animals belong in open spaces, not small enclosures. Both people care about animals. They just weigh things differently.

*(drawing: Every real issue has at least two honest sides. The last box is where your own thinking happens.)*

**Tip.** When you look at an issue, ask yourself what each side cares about. Naming what matters to them helps you understand their view, even before you decide your own.

**Example.** Now think about fairness. Some children have more toys, trips, or chances than others. One view: it isn't fair, since no child chooses the family they're born into. Another view: families work hard and get to spend their earnings how they choose. Both views point to something true.

**Tip.** Pick the side that makes the most sense to you, and say why. Then admit what the other side gets right too. That is what a fair, thoughtful position sounds like.

**Recap.** On a real issue, find two honest perspectives, pick where you stand and why, and admit the other side has a point too.
