## Ready when they can

- Use an 'I feel ___ when ___' statement during a disagreement
- Choose to tell an adult how they feel instead of acting out physically
- Describe their feelings about a difficult situation using at least two emotion words

## Lesson: Using Words for Feelings

You already feel things every day. Now use words to show them. Try saying, 'I feel ___ when ___.' Words help people know what is happening inside you.

**Example.** Ben's block tower fell down. He wanted to yell. Instead he said, 'I feel frustrated when my tower falls.' His grown-up gave him a hug.

*(drawing: Point to each part of Ben's sentence as you say it. The feeling word does the magic.)*

You can also tell a grown-up how you feel. Say, 'I feel left out' instead of walking away alone. Telling someone is using your words too.

**Tip.** Use two feeling words when things get hard, like 'angry' and 'sad.' This helps people understand you better.

**Recap.** Say your feelings with words instead of actions.
