## Ready when they can

- Explain that friendships changing is normal and doesn't mean something is wrong
- Describe a strategy for making new friends, such as joining a club or inviting someone to play
- Talk about a friendship that changed and how they handled it

## Lesson: Friendships change over time

Friendships change as people grow. A friend you sat with every day last year might not be your closest friend now, and that is normal. It does not mean you did anything wrong.

**Example.** Maya and Priya were best friends in first grade. By third grade, Priya joined the soccer team and started eating lunch with her teammates. Maya felt a little sad at first. Then she joined the art club and met Jordan, who loved drawing dinosaurs just as much as she did.

*(drawing: Maya and Priya's friendship changed as they grew, and both of them ended up with friends old and new.)*

**Tip.** To make a new friend, look for people who like the same things you do. Join a club, ask to sit with someone new at lunch, or invite a classmate to play at recess.

It is okay to feel a little sad when a friendship changes. You can still be friendly with that person and build new friendships too. New friends do not erase old ones.

**Recap.** Friendships change as people grow, and that is normal. You can handle it by staying open to new friends, like joining a club or inviting someone to play.
