# Good Stress and Bad Stress

Distinguish between eustress (the productive, motivating kind of stress) and distress (harmful, overwhelming stress); explain the physiological stress response (fight-flight-freeze, HPA axis) and how chronic stress affects the body and mind; identify common adolescent stressors (academic pressure, social comparison, physical change, uncertainty about the future); evaluate evidence-based coping strategies (exercise, sleep, mindfulness, social support, expressive writing); recognise warning signs that stress has crossed into anxiety or depression and know where to get help

## Lesson: Good Stress and Bad Stress

You already know how to bounce back from tough moments and pick a coping strategy that fits. Now let's look closer at stress itself. Not all stress works against you. Eustress is the kind that pushes you forward, like the flutter before a big game that sharpens your focus. Distress is the kind that wears you down, like worry that loops in your head and won't let you rest.

*(drawing: A little stress sharpens your focus, like the middle bar. Too much stress crashes it, like the bar on the right.)*

Here's what happens inside you during a stressful moment. Your brain notices a threat, real or imagined, and sends a signal through a control center called the HPA axis. That center tells your body to release adrenaline and cortisol, chemicals that speed up your heart and tense your muscles. This is the fight-flight-freeze response: your body gets ready to fight, run, or freeze until the danger passes. A short burst is normal. But if it never turns off, cortisol stays high for weeks, and that can wear down your sleep, your immune system, and your focus.

**Example.** Maya has a big exam this week. Every time she thinks about it, her heart pounds and her thoughts race, classic fight-flight-freeze signs. Instead of studying until midnight, she goes for a run after school. Moving her body lowers her cortisol and clears her head. She also texts a friend who's stressed about the same exam, and saying it out loud helps. That night she sleeps eight hours. The next morning her mind feels steadier.

If stress hangs around for weeks, disrupts your sleep, or makes you lose interest in things you used to enjoy, it may have crossed into anxiety or depression. Tell a parent, a teacher, or a school counselor. Asking for help is a strong, sensible move, not a weak one.

**Recap.** Eustress pushes you forward and distress wears you down, but when stress lasts too long, real coping strategies and trusted adults can help you reset.
