## Ready when they can

- Log a week of sleep and match the shortest nights against how the next day went
- Name three effects of a short night that are not tiredness (thinner patience, weaker recall, faster risk-taking)
- Move one real decision to a rested hour and say why the timing mattered

## Lesson: Short nights, sharp tongue

Sleep is overnight maintenance for your brain, not switching off. While you sleep, the brain files the day's learning into memory, resets emotional reactions, and restores attention for tomorrow. Short nights thin your patience, blur recall, and push you toward quick risky choices, which is why one bad night can wreck a test you studied hard for.

A night runs in repeating cycles of light, deep and dreaming sleep, about ninety minutes each. Deep sleep early in the night repairs the body, while dreaming sleep later files memories and steadies mood. Cutting the night short steals mostly the later cycles, which is exactly why short sleep hits judgement and recall first.

**Example.** Dev keeps a one week log of bedtimes against how each next day went. The pattern stares back: short nights pair with a sharp tongue and a blank mind. He anchors the same wake time daily, winds screens down before bed, and shifts bedtime in small jumps instead of all at once.

**Tip.** Time your hardest calls for rested hours. Move one real decision, talk or test to the morning and note why the timing mattered. One heroic early night cannot fix a week of short sleep, so protect the full set of cycles every night.

**Recap.** Short sleep steals judgement first, so log it and decide rested.
