# Leadership Styles and Influence

Distinguish different leadership styles (directive, democratic, servant, transformational) and understand when each is appropriate; understand that influence in a group comes with responsibility, and explore the difference between leading through inspiration versus coercion; practise inclusive leadership: actively creating space for quieter voices and diverse perspectives; understand the ethics of influence and the boundary between persuasion and manipulation; explore concepts of consent and coercion in peer relationships; reflect on what kind of influence they want to have in their communities

## Lesson: The Many Ways to Lead a Group

Leadership is not one fixed personality. It is a set of choices about how you use influence when a group looks to you. Some leaders give clear directions. Some ask the group to discuss and vote. Some focus on what the team needs. Some describe a shared goal in a way that pulls people forward. No single style is right for every moment. The situation decides which one fits.

Directive leadership means giving clear instructions fast, useful when time is short or safety matters. Democratic leadership means the group discusses and votes together, useful when there is time and different ideas matter. Servant leadership means asking what your team needs and clearing obstacles for them. Transformational leadership means describing a shared goal in a way that makes people want to reach for it.

*(drawing: The situation picks the style. Rushed moments need clear directions, open moments can hold a vote, a stuck team needs obstacles cleared, and a group with no goal needs a vision.)*

**Example.** During a group project, Marcus makes every decision alone without asking anyone else. He is not being cruel, he is just stuck in one style: directive. Priya suggests a two-minute round where each person shares one idea before the group decides. That single move shifts the group toward a democratic style and brings in ideas Marcus would have missed on his own.

Influence always comes with responsibility. Real persuasion sounds like, 'Here is why I think this works, what do you think?' It leaves room for someone to disagree and still belong to the group. Manipulation and coercion use guilt, pressure, or the threat of leaving someone out until they give in. If a person can say no without losing the group's respect, you are persuading them. If they cannot, you are pressuring them.

**Tip.** Before you push an idea in a group, notice who has not spoken yet, and ask them directly. Inclusive leadership means making space for quieter voices, not just following whoever talks the loudest.

**Recap.** Good leaders switch styles to fit the moment and use their influence to make room for others, not to corner them.
