# Other People's Feelings and Thoughts

Understand that other people have their own feelings and thoughts, and that these might be different from your own — a foundational awareness that not everyone sees or feels things the same way

Subject: Personal & Social Development · Area: Empathy & Social Awareness · Ages 5 to 7

## Ready when they can

- State that other people can feel differently about the same thing
- Give an example of a time someone felt differently from them about the same situation
- Accept another child's feeling as valid even when it differs from their own

## Lesson: Other people feel their own way

You have your own feelings. Other people have feelings too. Their feelings can be different from yours, about the same thing.

**Example.** Ben loves swimming. His sister Amy is scared of the pool. They look at the same pool. Ben feels excited. Amy feels scared. Both feelings are real.

*(drawing: One pool, two feelings. Both feelings are real.)*

Someone else's feeling does not have to match yours. You do not have to feel the same way to believe them. Their feeling is real, even if it feels different to you.

**Tip.** If a friend feels differently than you, say 'that makes sense.' It helps them feel heard and understood.

**Recap.** Other people can feel differently than you. Their feelings are just as real as yours.
