## Ready when they can

- Describe at least three personal coping strategies and when each is most effective
- Recommend a strategy to a friend based on the friend's specific situation
- Evaluate whether a strategy they tried worked well and explain their reasoning

## Lesson: Your Personal Coping Toolkit

Everyone feels stressed, worried, or upset sometimes. No single strategy fixes every feeling, so it helps to have more than one way to feel better. The group of strategies that work best for you is your personal coping toolkit.

*(drawing: When something upsets you, walk through these four steps.)*

**Example.** Mia feels shaky and worried the morning of a spelling test, so she takes a ten-minute walk before school and comes back calmer. That evening she feels sad because her best friend is out sick, so this time she calls her friend on the phone instead. Same girl, two different feelings, two different tools from her toolkit.

**Tip.** After you try a strategy, check in with yourself. Ask: did that actually help? If it did not work this time, that does not mean something is wrong with you. It just means you reach for a different tool next time.

Your toolkit is personal, so a strategy that works for you might not work for a friend. Before you recommend anything, ask what your friend is feeling and what has helped them before. Then suggest a strategy that fits their situation, not just yours.

**Recap.** Your coping toolkit holds more than one strategy, because different feelings and situations call for different tools.
