After a serious rift, three options stay open: repair the friendship, keep it at a smaller size, or end it. Choose by what actually changed, whether it repeats, and what the other person did afterwards.

## Ready when they can

- Name the three options for a real rift and give one condition that points to each
- Separate a one-off from a pattern by citing what happened before, not by how bad the last time felt
- Describe how they would keep a friendship at a smaller size without a public fallout

## Lesson: After a friendship breaks

When a friend hurts you, sort the situation before you act. A thoughtless one-off that they own is different from a pattern where apologies never change anything. Name what happened, say how it landed, and watch what they do next. Three options stay open: repair it, keep it smaller, or end it.

Repair only works with a real apology. It names the specific harm, skips the excuses, and says what will change next time. One honest apology plus visible change rebuilds trust. Five dramatic apologies with the same repeat behaviour bury it, so judge the behaviour after the talk, not the promises during it.

**Example.** Lena is stung by gossip about her. She confronts her friend once with facts and listens hard. Denial, blame shifting or a repeat performance all point one way. She shrinks the friendship down: fewer plans and less confiding, with no dramatic announcement, keeping shared circles calm.

**Tip.** Downgrading is quiet work, not a public fallout. Match the option to the evidence: repair fits the owned one-off, distance or goodbye fits the repeating pattern. Write down what happened before, not how bad the last time felt, and let that record guide you.

**Recap.** Sort one-off from pattern, then repair, shrink, or end it.
