## Ready when they can

- Explain their own point of view calmly during a disagreement
- Listen to the other person's perspective without interrupting
- Suggest a compromise or solution that addresses both sides

## Lesson: Resolving Disagreements with Friends

You and your friend will not always want the same thing. Maybe you want tag and they want hopscotch. That is normal. What matters is what you do next. You already know how to listen and how to use words for your feelings. Now you can use both at once to work things out.

**Example.** Mia wants to play tag at break. Jayden wants hopscotch. Mia says, 'I feel like playing tag today, it's my favorite.' Jayden listens without cutting in. Then Jayden says, 'I really want hopscotch, but we could play tag first and hopscotch after.' Mia agrees. Nobody yelled, and both games got played.

*(drawing: Tag first, hopscotch after. Both games get a turn.)*

**Tip.** Start with 'I feel...' instead of 'You always...'. It says what is true for you without blaming your friend.

A real compromise is not a contest to win. It means you both give a little, and you both get something you wanted from the start.

**Recap.** Say how you feel, listen without cutting in, then find a compromise you both can live with.
