## Ready when they can

- Describe a cultural practice different from their own and explain what they find interesting about it
- Ask respectful questions to learn about someone else's traditions or beliefs
- Explain why understanding different cultures makes communities stronger

## Lesson: The world holds many traditions

Every family and community has its own culture: the traditions, foods, celebrations, languages, and beliefs that shape daily life. Around the world, there are thousands of ways to celebrate a new year, mark growing up, or say goodbye to someone who died. None of these ways is more correct than another. They're just different paths to the same human moments.

**Example.** Zara's family lights candles and shares sweets during Diwali, a festival of lights. Her friend Malik's family fasts during the day for a whole month during Ramadan, then eats together each evening after sunset. Both traditions bring families closer, even though they look completely different.

*(drawing: Zara's family and Malik's family celebrate in different ways. Count the hearts: three for each family. Different traditions can hold the same closeness.)*

When you meet a tradition that feels new to you, curiosity works better than judgment. Instead of thinking 'that's strange,' try asking yourself why people do it and what it means to them.

**Tip.** A respectful question sounds like 'What does this celebration mean to your family?' A dismissive comment sounds like 'Why do you do that weird thing?' The difference is genuine interest instead of judgment.

Communities with many cultures often solve problems in more ways, because people bring different experiences, foods, languages, and ideas to the table. Learning about someone else's traditions doesn't take anything away from your own. It adds to what you understand about being human.

**Recap.** Different cultures aren't right or wrong, just different, and asking respectful questions is how you learn from them.
