# Roles in a Group

Understand different roles people play in groups — leader, supporter, mediator, idea-generator — and recognise that effective groups need a mix of roles, not everyone trying to be the leader

## Ready when they can

- Name at least three different roles people can play in a group
- Identify their own preferred role and describe its strengths
- Explain why groups work better when different people take different roles

## Lesson: Every group needs different roles

In a group, people don't all do the same job. Some plan, some help, some solve arguments, and some come up with ideas. When everyone wants to do the same thing, or everyone wants to lead, the group gets stuck.

**Example.** Four friends make a poster together. Mia decides the plan for the poster. Josh cheers everyone on and hands out markers. Priya notices two friends disagree about colors and helps them agree. Sam keeps coming up with new ideas for pictures. The poster gets finished because each person did something different.

Here are four roles people often play in a group. The leader guides the plan. The supporter helps and encourages others. The mediator helps solve disagreements. The idea-generator comes up with new ideas. Most groups need all of these, not just one.

**Tip.** You don't have to be the leader to help a group. Notice which role feels natural to you. Maybe you're great at cheering people on, or spotting a good idea. That role matters just as much as leading.

**Recap.** Groups work best with a mix of roles, so you don't always have to be in charge to help your group succeed.
