## Ready when they can

- Describe how a character in a story feels and give reasons based on the plot
- Predict how another child would feel in a described scenario
- Use perspective-taking during a real disagreement to understand the other person's view

## Lesson: Seeing things from someone else's side

Everyone sees things a little differently. Perspective-taking means imagining how someone else feels, based on what happened to them, not just what you would feel.

**Example.** In a story, Mia's dog runs away and she searches for him all afternoon. A good reader does not think, 'I would feel fine.' Instead, they think about what happened to Mia and imagine her worry.

*(drawing: Mia's dog is missing. From Mia's side of the story, she feels very worried, not fine.)*

One question helps most: 'How would I feel if that happened to me?' Ask it when you read a story, or when you see a friend upset. It helps you guess feelings, even when nobody says them out loud.

**Example.** Zara and Tom both want the same swing. Zara is about to shout, but she pauses and thinks, 'Tom has been waiting a long time too. He probably feels left out.' Thinking this way helps her talk instead of shout.

**Tip.** Look for clues: what happened to the person, their face, and their words. These clues help you guess their feelings, even if you would feel differently in their place.

**Recap.** Pause, imagine what happened to the other person, and ask how they might feel because of it.
