# Self-Reflection in Relationships

Reflect on their own role and behaviour in relationships — recognising patterns in how they interact with others, understanding what they contribute to friendships, and identifying areas where they could improve as a friend or team member

Subject: Personal & Social Development · Area: Friendship & Cooperation · Ages 9 to 11

## Ready when they can

- Identify a pattern in their own social behaviour, such as always wanting to lead or avoiding confrontation
- Describe what they do well in relationships and one area they'd like to improve
- Set a specific social goal, such as 'I will ask others for their ideas before sharing mine'

## Lesson: Your Part in the Friendship

Every friendship has two people in it, and you're one of them. It's easy to only notice what a friend does wrong. Looking at your own part matters just as much. You already know how to spot patterns in your own reactions. Today you'll use that same skill to look at how you act with friends.

*(drawing: Sam picked the same role four times in a row. Noticing a repeat like this is the first step in self-reflection.)*

**Example.** Priya looks back on four group projects. Each time, she shared her idea first and rarely asked what anyone else thought. She's good at cheering her group on when they're stuck, that's a real strength. But she wants to get better at asking others for their ideas. She picks one clear goal: 'I will ask two people for their ideas before I share mine.'

**Tip.** After you spend time with a friend or group, ask yourself: What did I just do? Would I want a friend to treat me the way I treated them? One honest answer is worth more than guessing.

**Recap.** You are one half of every friendship, so notice your own patterns, name a strength and a goal, and try one specific thing next time.
